Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) revenue committee has developed a strategy to bring more businesses under its professional tax net. Through this strategy, the revenue service aims to encourage more businesses to come forward for the payment of business tax.
The Revenue Department will contact the Registrar of Companies (ROC), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the State Ministry of Finance to implement this strategy. The civic authority will request a complete list of companies registered with the ROC and compare it with its own list of companies. “This way we will be able to find out which companies and individuals do not pay business tax,” said Jainik Vakil, chairman of AMC’s revenue committee.
He added that it is not always that companies do not want to pay tax but ignore that they also have to pay this tax. “We will publish notices to businesses, institutions and individuals who do not pay,” Vakil said. The ministry also decided that if a company, an institution or a natural person who has not paid the business tax and does not have a business tax certificate comes forward to pay the tax, it is enough for him to file an auto – return and pay tax for the current year and last two years.
In addition, the revenue department will contact RBI officials and ask them to add a professional tax certificate to the mandatory list of the know your customer (KYC) procedure when companies or individuals open a checking account in n any bank.
The civic body will also apply to the state finance ministry and ask it to grant it the power to take decisions relating to business tax. “All local autonomous institutions only collect taxes, they do not have the power to take administrative decisions such as waiving interest. We will ask the state finance ministry to grant decision-making powers to civic bodies, ”Vakil said.
