Juan Mata was quick to assess the dismal season Manchester United endured and recommended big changes going forward.

The Red Devils are happy to see the back of a poor campaign in which a host of problems have plagued the club. Although they could still feature in the Europa League next season, it’s no consolation for what they should be looking for.

United, who finished second in the Premier League last season, have started well, helped by the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lost his managerial job in November and Ralf Rangnick was unable to inspire a turnaround. In reality, Man UtdHopes of finishing in the top four have faded.

Mata, 34, has been on the periphery of the first team this season but has seen everything go wrong.

He then urged new manager Erik ten Hag to get the best out of the players, reset the club’s culture and make the club better able to deal with big changes such as a change of manager.

“It’s clear that on the pitch we made a lot of mistakes,” said the Spaniard Athleticism.

“We could also have handled certain situations that were happening in the club better, the changes of managers, the negative things. I think in the end we let it affect Carrington’s energy too much.

“Some standards have not been met. Whether it’s the attitude, the level of training, off the pitch, which doesn’t include the players, I think we all agree.

“If we’re completely honest and talk to some people at the club, we haven’t been good enough. And that’s where I think we could learn. There were also some things that were out of our control, that we should not let it affect us.

“Naturally, you feel that when you can see that certain things aren’t good enough. But we shouldn’t have let things happen. Many circumstances can affect certain behaviors. If you don’t have a solid foundation, when bad things happen, it’s hard to all stay together.

mata insisted that anyone who fails to meet the standards Man Utd expect is ‘not up to the task and should not be here’.

He added that the failure to get the most out of the club’s star players is a “big problem”.

“From a manager’s point of view, victory will come closer when you get the most out of every player in the team; those who play more, those who play less,” Mata said.

And there have been plenty of players who have fallen victim to that criticism at Man Utd this season.

Man Utd stars are guilty

Last season, Bruno Fernandes broke Frank Lampard’s record for goals by a Premier League midfielder in all competitions in a season, with 28.

However, he dropped out this season, as did centre-back and captain Harry Maguire.

Meanwhile, summer signing Jadon Sancho hasn’t had the desired impact after leaving Borussia Dortmund.

And while Marcus Rashford returned from shoulder surgery with instant impact, he too struggled.

As for who played, Anthony Elanga showed promise in his breakthrough campaign up front. Moreover, goalkeeper David de Gea has saved United countless times.
