Bhadrak: Yesterday, during a major drug smuggling, rural police in Bhadrak seized brown sugar worth over 1 crore rupees near Charampa in the district.
While enforcing COVID-19 lockdown and security standards, rural police in Bhadrak intercepted an automatic rickshaw carrying four people, including a woman near Charampa on the NH-16 under the Dhamra railway bridge.
Suspicious, the cops searched the vehicle and recovered the contraband object weighing 1,090 grams as well as cash for Rs 1 lakh, three cell phones and other offending items.
During questioning, it was revealed that the accused Kunilata Sarangi (30 years old), Manoj Kumar Das (23 years old), Ajay Kumar Sarangi (32 years old) had traveled to Jaleswar by autorickshaw and obtained the smuggled item from a drug supplier. The supplier also sent another man named SK Abdul Hamid (45) with brown sugar for his supply in Bhadrak and its outskirts.
SK Abdul Hamid happens to be the brother of Jaleswar’s drug mafia ‘Chachi’ and the most wanted stepfather of SK Asgar of Jaleswar.
The 4 quads were arrested under section 21 (C) of the NDPS Act. However, Bhadrak police failed to catch the supplier. Further investigation is underway.
