This major mid-term upgrade to On1 Photo Raw brings more exciting and unique features that will definitely earn it more conversions from other asset management, raw development and editing software.

There are major versions of On1 Photo Raw twice a year, and the one released in winter is a free upgrade to the latest version for those who have purchased the current perpetual license. The update is, of course, also included in the subscription packages.

On1 has released previews of its software updates over the past few weeks, and it looks like they’re doing everything they can to polish what I believe is not only a viable alternative but, for many, an even better alternative to Lightroom. / Photoshop combination.

New tools

The new tools in version 2022.1 include features that address criticisms that some have voiced in the past:

Smooth Tool: This tool allows you to push, bloat, and pinch areas of your photo, reducing blemishes and reshaping regions. It’s completely non-destructive, allowing for easy readjustments every shot after shot.

Advanced Search: On1 says finding the right photos will be much easier with the new Advanced Search dialog. Harnessing the power of a modern database to find the metadata of all your photos, they claim it goes way beyond the basics. This includes searching on any combination of fields, with field operators and smart ranges. The previews for this installation seem to take this task of cataloging and finding photos far beyond other asset management software.

Smart Albums: These will allow you to save your favorite searches, giving you efficient access to the right photos.

Snapshots: Allowing you to freeze a point and time, so you can always go back to it, snapshots are used to compare different treatments of a photo at different stages of the development process.

Crop Tool Presets: These now allow you to store custom crop proportions so you can access them quickly.

Visualize Dust While Editing: The new View Dust in Editing Tools option squirts dust, so you don’t miss a single one if you have a dirty sensor.

Shared Presets: Presets you create or install from preset packs will be able to be shared between all supported versions of ON1 applications, such as ON1 Photo RAW and ON1 Effects.

Topographic Map: There will be a topographic map option in the map view.

Performance Improvements: The new version includes faster background export, faster opening of raw files, improved GPU support for M1, and an improved AI model for Sky Swap AI.

New cameras: Added support for raw files of Canon EOS R3, Sony A7 IV, Ricoh GR IIIx and Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 II.

New lenses: OLYMPUS M.12-45 mm F4.0

What On1 says

ON1 claims to have provided “award-winning software to millions of photographers around the world.” It achieves this by being different from other photo software companies, claiming to put the photographer first, meaning that customers have full control over all aspects of their photography, including having a say in the products developed by ON1. This certainly appears to be the case, as historical criticisms made about possible shortcomings are addressed in the updates.

Our goals aim to make ON1 Photo RAW the best photo editing software for photographers. It will never change. This new update brings great features and improvements to help simplify workflows. Customers should also be excited about what’s still to come in version 2022. – Craig Keudell, President of ON1.

On1 introduced the following new features in this version of its software in September:

– Integration of ON1 NoNoise AI
– New Photoshop plugin host
– Export recently reorganized
– New line mask tool

– Apple Silicium Native

Opinion

Far from playing the role of second violin compared to other applications, On1 seems to be leading the way in many areas. For example, Lightroom just caught up with the masking tools introduced by On1 years ago. Also, I know it’s subjective, but raw development algorithms perform much better than Adobe’s. In addition, the NoNoise AI tool is remarkable in its results. These updates will certainly be attractive factors for many photographers.

For those who are planning to switch from Lightroom Classic to On1, it is possible to import your collections from Lightroom to On1.

I can’t wait to put On1 Photo Raw 2022.1 to the test when it releases in a few weeks. It’s good to know that there are independent companies that are working hard to bring new and innovative features to market. It is also encouraging that On1 is considering the needs of its customers and presenting the features they want.
