As Indian companies prepare to manufacture the Russian-made Sputnik V COVID vaccine to meet huge demand in the country, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that Russia was the only country in the world ready to transfer the technology and increase production. abroad and noted that the vaccine was sold in 66 countries.
The Russian president’s remarks came a day after officials in New Delhi said the Serum Institute of India had received preliminary approval from the country’s drug regulatory body for the manufacture of Sputnik V.
Already, Indian pharmaceutical company Dr Reddy’s Laboratories received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Russian vaccine in April 2021. Panacea Biotec, in collaboration with Russian sovereign wealth fund RDIF, has also started production of the Sputnik V vaccine in India.

Dismissing claims about the effectiveness of the Sputnik V vaccine, the Russian president, in a virtual interaction with editors from major international news agencies, including the Press Trust of India, Associated Press and Reuters, said the delay in registering the vaccine in Europe was due to a “competitive struggle” and “commercial interests” there.
With China being blamed by some countries, especially the United States, for the COVID-19 pandemic, Putin said too much has been said on the subject and stressed that the crisis should not be “politicized.”
He was responding to a question about the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Too much has been said on this topic already, so it seems to me that it would be pointless to comment further on it. I don’t think I can say anything new or intriguing,” Putin said via a translator.
Noting that there was a competitive fight against Sputnik V, Putin said: “In 66 countries we sell our vaccine, it’s a huge market for us. I’m pretty sure the allegations are for business reasons, but we are following humanitarian reasons. . ”
He further asserted that “it is recognized by international experts, the vaccine is effective, its effectiveness is 97.6%. We are the only country in the world that is ready to transfer the technology and is ready to expand our production abroad “.
Putin also expressed hope that the challenges created by the novel coronavirus pandemic will prompt countries to remove politically motivated restrictions against each other.
