Bio-based products are cost-comparable, readily available, and perform as well or better than their conventional counterparts.
HOUSTON – September 1, 2021 – (Newswire.com)
Sinomax USA, Inc. today announced that it has been awarded the Certified Bio-Based Product Label from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The products, the 3-inch memory foam mattress topper and the 1.5-inch memory foam mattress topper, are now able to display a unique USDA label that highlights its percentage of bio-based content. Third-party verification of a product’s bio-based content is administered through the USDA BioPreferred program, an initiative created by the Farm Bill of 2002 (and recently reauthorized by the Farm Bill of 2018). One of the goals of the BioPreferred program is to increase the development, purchase and use of bio-based products. The USDA Certified Bio-Based Product Label displays the bio-based content of a product, which is the part of a product that comes from a renewable source, such as plant, animal, marine, or forestry raw materials. The use of renewable bio-based materials eliminates the need for non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals. Bio-based products, thanks to the displacement of oil, have played an increasingly important role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that exacerbate global climate change.
Bio-based products are cost-comparable, readily available, and perform as well or better than their conventional counterparts. “The development of our technological capabilities has enabled us to continue to grow. We continually invest in technologies and partnerships that focus on environmentally friendly and sustainable methods and materials, ”said John Béliveau, Sinomax Director of Operations. We congratulate Sinomax USA, Inc. on achieving the USDA Certified Biobased Product label, ”said Vernell Thompson, USDA BioPreferred Program. “Sinomax USA, Inc.’s products contribute to an ever-expanding market that adds value to renewable agricultural products, creates jobs in rural communities and reduces our dependence on oil. According to a report released by the USDA in July 2019, bio-based products contributed $ 459 billion to the US economy in 2016 (a 17% increase from 2014) and directly and indirectly support 4.6 million jobs. The report’s research team estimates the reduction in fossil fuels and associated GHG emissions from biobased products equivalent to approximately 12 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) avoided as of 2016. The increased production of Renewable chemicals and bio-based products contributes to the development and expansion of the American bioeconomy – where society turns to agriculture for sustainable sources of fuel, energy, chemicals and products.

About the USDA BioPreferred Program and Certified Bio-Based Product Label:
The BioPreferred program is a USDA-led initiative that helps develop and expand markets for bio-based products. The BioPreferred program is transforming the market for bio-based products through two initiatives: mandatory purchasing requirements for federal agencies and federal contractors, and voluntary product certification and labeling. Bio-based products cover a wide range of applications, such as lubricants, cleaning products, chemicals and bioplastics. The USDA Certified Bio-Based Product Label communicates the bio-based content of a product. Expressed as a percentage, the bio-based content is the ratio between the non-fossil organic carbon (new organic carbon) and the total organic carbon in a product. New organic carbon is derived from newly created materials. Total organic carbon in a product is made up of new organic carbon and old organic carbon from fossil carbonaceous materials, such as petroleum, coal, or natural gas. Over 3,500 products have been awarded the USDA Certified Biobased Product label.
