Thiruvananthapuram: one month after the launch of the city’s circular service; KSRTC will follow with color-themed city shuttles and urban radial services.
The urban shuttle service which is expected to launch in January 2022 aims to establish connectivity with the rural outskirts covering the main areas which represent high traffic to different places in the city.
“Urban shuttles and urban radial services are part of the larger plan to redevelop the city’s transport network. The city’s circular service was a start.
“Peripheral urban shuttle services will cover areas where a good number of people disembark and board the bus in rural areas. We are slowly bringing about behavior change among passengers within the framework of convenient and hassle-free connectivity, ”said Biju Prabhakar, President and CEO of KSRTC.
Pallichal – East Fort, Malayinkeezhu – Vikas Bhavan, Karakulam – Peroorkada, Mannanthala – Medical College, Thiruvallam – Manacaud, Kazhakootam – Medical College are some of the routes that will be covered by the city shuttle.
KSRTC hopes to establish a sufficient number of interchange points where a passenger from the nearest rural suburb can proceed to the desired destination in the city without having to search for other modes of transportation.
Once the services are fully operational, the long distance services that currently link the city to rural areas will be phased out.
Authorities are hopeful that the newly launched services will pay off in due course and that the expenses for the day-to-day operation of current services connecting the city to rural destinations in Thiruvananthapuram District could be redirected to urban and circular shuttle services.
A city radial service that will circle the city connecting places like Neyyattinkara and East Fort, Thampanoor to Kaniyapuram or Vizhinjam to East Fort is also planned. This is primarily intended for passengers who do not need a connecting bus.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced in November the first service of the new KSRTC company, “City Circular Services”.
In order to quickly identify routes, different colors including red, blue, magenta, yellow, purple, brown and green are assigned for each route.
KSRTC will implement the interchange method to facilitate transportation whereby a passenger can travel from one place to another without having to reach the heart of the city.
The interchange method facilitates transportation by allowing passengers to swap the bus at certain locations.
Interchange points are the stops where more than one bus crosses.
About 24 such exchange points have been set up on seven routes of the KSRTC service.
